For wireless data loggers, battery life is calculated based on the assumption that recorded data is downloaded via wireless communication once a day.
Monitoring current readings, for example, that requires frequent wireless data transmission, will shorten the battery life.
For non-wireless data loggers, the basic assumption used is a 10-sec (or longer) recording interval and transmission frequency of 4 times a month.

Indoor partition walls, ceilings, metal, and other obstacles can shorten the radio transmission range compared to an environment where radio waves can travel in a straight line from the Remote Unit to the Base Unit without any obstacles.
Radio waves also pass through and around obstacles leaking from gaps or spaces. Hence the transmission range depends on the building construction and contents of the rooms. Therefore, it is difficult to say what the transmission range will be when using in an indoor environment.

I want to have a mail sent when a warning occurs, how can I do this?
To use the warning mail function, it is necessary to have access to a SMTP/POP server. If you have an Internet connection, use the mail server of your Internet service provider or some other means to access a mail server. If you have a mail server on your company LAN, there may be specific instructions and settings for sending mail. Please ask the network administrator at your company for details. When using a TR-7wf/nw device with T&D WebStorage Service, it is not necessary to make SMTP server settings to send warning report mail from the WebStorage Server.

What is "POP3before"?
POP3before is one method used for the sending and receiving of mail. A mail server uses two types of protocol to send and receive mail. Generally when mail is sent it uses an SMTP server and when receiving mail uses a POP server. Normally, the sending and receiving of mail are done separately. However, recently in an effort to fight Spam mail a new type of mail server, referred to as POP3before, has been developed. The way it works is that after logging in with your Login ID and password to the POP server you can then have access to the SMTP server for a certain length of time in order to send mail.

Is it possible to deactivate "POP3before"?
POP3before is controlled by the administrator of your company LAN or by your provider and unfortunately there is nothing that you can do to cancel it. If you wish to use the warning mail function, please make sure to use a mail server that complies with normal SMTP / POP specifications.

Data Loggers

How can I clear the data that is logged in a data logger?
In almost all of our data loggers there is no feature allowing you to clear data in and by itself.
By stopping and restarting recording, all data will automatically be cleared. In the MCR-4V and MCR-4TC it is possible to delete all recorded data from both the unit itself and via PC software.

For how long is it possible to continuously record?
T&D data loggers basically come in two model types. Some models can record up to 8000 readings before becoming full and other models can record up to 16.000 readings before becoming full.

The amount of time that a logger can continuously record will be determined by the number of readings it can record and also by the recording interval at which it is set to record.
Below is a chart showing the longest amount of time each of the types of loggers can record before becoming full.
Please use this data as an estimate when deciding which type of logger to purchase.

Can units with a waterproof rating of IP64 be used while submersed in water?
IP64 is a rating for everyday use; meaning it is splash resistant. Therefore splashes of water from a sink or rain will not be a problem, but it cannot be guaranteed for use while submersed in water.
The unit itself can be submersed in cold or hot water for a short time without water entering the unit. But if for example it was in hot water of 60℃ and then moved to cold water of 0℃, the internal pressure of the logger would drop and water may seep into the case.
If you wish to measure and record the temperature in water, please place only the sensor in the water.

Sensors

What kind of measurement precision loss can I expect after using for some time?
The circuitry in the device has been designed to withstand the effects of changes in the surrounding environment and changes in electrical properties; therefore the precision of the measurements does not degrade over time.
Although the sensor element of the temperature sensor does not experience loss of precision due to use over time, due to external factors, such as build up of water, losses in precision will occur. If you find that measurements are becoming less and less precise, we suggest changing the sensor. Humidity sensors will also lose precision due to water and dust buildup.

Wireless Communication

Will the wireless transmission range be shortened when the Remote and Base Units are used inside a building?
Indoor partition walls, ceilings, metal, and other obstacles can shorten the radio transmission range compared to an environment where radio waves can travel in a straight line from the Remote Unit to the Base Unit without any obstacles.
Radio waves also pass through and around obstacles leaking from gaps or spaces. Hence the transmission range depends on the building construction and contents of the rooms. Therefore, it is difficult to say what the transmission range will be when using in an indoor environment.

Can the wireless communication between Base and Remote Units have an effect on other nearby devices?
The wireless radio frequency output during communication in the RTR-500 and RTR-7 Series are about 10mW; about the same as a low power transceiver.
Output for the RTR-5 Series is just one-tenth of that or 1mW. Hence no effect will occur on nearby devices or equipment.
Moreover, the devices are registered with the proper authority and comply with local regulations (FCC or CE); there should be no interference with communication of other nearby devices.

Do other nearby wireless devices and/or electronic devices which give off noise have an effect on the data logger wireless communication?
Yes, high output wireless devices or other electronic devices which put out high levels of noise in close proximity will have an effect on communication.
RTR-500, RTR-7 and RTR-5 Series are all designed with a retry function that will resend a communication that was not successfully completed.
Moreover, in the RTR-7 Series, if noise or other trouble is detected before communication is carried out, the base unit will automatically search out a unaffected frequency channel to carry out communication.
Note however that even with these features successful communication can not be guaranteed.

If I use two similar devices in close proximity will it cause communication interference?
If two or more wireless loggers from the same series are used in separate logging systems it may cause interference.
The RTR-500, RTR-7 and RTR-5 Series are all designed with a multiple number of frequency channels for communication between the Base and Remote Units. If interference occurs or you think it may occur, it is possible to change the frequency channels to alleviate that problem.
For the RTR-500 Series and the RTR-5 Series it is possible to make frequency channel settings when registering loggers as Remote Units to a Base Unit. In the RTR-7 Series, the Base Unit has a function to auto-search for unused channels whereby settings can be made

Measuring Temperature and Humidity

Why is the temperature measurement range narrower in the temperature-humidity sensors than in the temperature sensors?
Because the temperature durability range for the humidity sensor is lower and both the temperature and humidity sensors are inside one case, the possible measurement range becomes narrower.

What is Hysteresis?
In general it stands for a condition in which there is a lag in response exhibited when reacting to changes in external forces so that although the conditions have been met for the affected body to return to its original state it does not for some time. Capacitance type humidity sensors (SHA-3151, SHB-3101) used in our High Precision Wide Range Temperature and Humidity Data Loggers will exhibit hysteresis upon returning to normal from very high humidity. Differences of ±1.5%RH may occur.
Moreover, when used in high temperature and high humidity environments (50℃/75%, 60℃/50%, 70℃/35%, and 80℃/25%) sensor hysteresis may become even larger and exceed ±1.5%RH.
Note that under certain circumstances, it may take several days to return to normal.

Calibration Options

Calibration certificates can be purchased along with the logger at the point of sale. Tinytags already in use can also be returned for a service calibration at any time, for a standard charge.

Tinytag data loggers are guaranteed to meet the specification stated on their data sheets for a twelve month period from the point of purchase. If required, additional validation certificates traceable to national standards may be purchased when buying the loggers. These calibration certificates can be provided at the time of purchase. Tinytags already in use can also be returned for a service calibration at any time, for a standard charge.

Calibration Certificates

The calibration certificate provides verification that the data logger has been checked and has been found to be reading within the specification quoted on the unit's data sheet. Data loggers are compared to a reference meter that has been calibrated in a UKAS (United Kingdom Accreditation Service) approved laboratory. The certificate lists the value recorded by the reference meter (the point at which the data logger was tested), the value recorded by the data logger and the error between the two readings (the certificate will also show readings before and after any adjustment made to the unit where appropriate). In addition to the reading information, calibration certificates also list the test method and the details of the equipment used to provide traceability back to national standards.

Calibration certificates do not have a period of validity, they are simply a statement of what the unit was reading when it was tested.

Standard Calibration Points

For temperature and humidity loggers, our standard calibration points, which are used unless otherwise specified, are:

  • Temperature: 0 and 30°C
  • Humidity: 20 and 80 % RH (at 25°C)
These points have been chosen to give good coverage for general purpose use, but should other points be required we can calibrate units within the following ranges:

  • Temperature: -20 to +150 °C
  • Humidity: 20 to 90 % RH (at 25°C)
CO2 loggers, our calibration points are:

  • 0 to 2000ppm units: 250, 500 and 1750ppm
  • 0 to 5000ppm units: 500, 2,500 and 4000ppm

We do not have standard calibration points for voltage and current loggers. Please contact us to discuss the calibration points you require.
